The capital

Your first port of call when you arrive in Romania is likely to be the capital city, Bucharest. There is more than enough to do in this city for two whole days, but we’ll try to take you into other parts too. You should probably look to take a walking tour through the city, which will give you plenty of insight and knowledge about the history of the place.

Romania was once a communist country, and there is plenty to fascinate anyone looking to learn about another way of life. There are plenty of cafes and parks for you to take a moment and watch the people of Bucharest pass you by.

Later you should head to the Romanian Athenaeum, a historic theater and concert venue. There is an amazing collection artwork on the walls, and if you time it right, you might just get to enjoy a concert during your stay.

Other architectural wonders to see include the Stavropoleos Monastery, the national museum, and the colossal Palace of Parliament. Bucharest is well-known for its nightlife, and there are many bars to people watch from, or if you’re feeling sociable, to enjoy some of that famous Romanian hospitality.

The castles

Transylvania is perhaps the most famous Romanian destination, and the good news is that it’s not far from the capital. You will have to take a bus out to the region, but it will be worth it to see what most people go to Romania for, Bran Castle.

That is the castle where people believe the legend of Dracula began and it will not disappoint you when you visit, it’s exactly how you would imagine it to be. Peles Castle is also nearby, which is another gothic structure that has to be seen to be believed. These are about two hours outside of Bucharest but are pretty much what you should plan your trip around.

Piatra Craiului National Park

It won’t take you long to notice the green hills on the horizon in Romania, and we suggest finding some time to go exploring a little. Perhaps when you make your way out of the city to go the castles, you should pack a picnic and venture to Piatra Craiului National Park. The place is tranquil, and you can walk through the mountainous trails or even partake in some rock climbing.

We suggest visiting the castles early in the morning, spending time in the national park and making it back to Bucharest by early afternoon. It means you won’t have to rush and you can be just as chilled out as the locals are. By planning one day of sightseeing and another whole day in the city you can get a feel for the different Romanian lifestyles, both urban and rural.
