It was built entirely thanks to donations from Brazilian Catholics, but it’s since become a cultural icon around the world.
Taj Mahal, India
Of course, if there’s an iconic travel photo, it’s the Taj Mahal. The monument is made entirely from white marble and was created to represent Mumtaz Mahal after she lost her life during childbirth. It’s believed that it took around 20,000 people to build the entire thing. Even with all of those workers, it still took more than two decades until it was finished.
Machu Picchu, Peru
There are wonders of the world, and then there’s Machu Picchu. This incredible site was built by the Incas back in the 1400s. However, it lay forgotten for years thanks to its hidden location. It wasn’t until 1911 that Machu Picchu was rediscovered. The ancient trails have been walked by thousands over the years, and it might not be hard to see how it attracts so many visitors.

The Mayans were a civilization that have intrigued many over the years. While no one knows what truly happened to them all those years ago, their ruins still stand tall and proud in Mexico. The area has stood for thousands of years, where visitors can enjoy the likes of the Temple of Tigers, the Castle, the Kukulkan Pyramid, and the ballgame court.
The Colosseum, Italy
This amphitheater has been standing for almost 2,000 years and is thought to be the largest ever built. It was once used for brutal sport throughout Ancient Roman times and has amazingly stayed in place ever since. This ancient city is more than just a wonder of the world, it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The buildings have been carved into the pink cliffs making everything seem as though it’s straight from a fairytale. It was once an essential location for traders. While you might not be able to see it from space, the Great Wall of China is over 2,300 years old and runs for more than 12,400 miles. It was once used to help protect China. Now, the Great Wall offers breathtaking views of the surroundings. Just be prepared for a long walk to the top of the stairs to take it all in.
