48 hours in Berlin – a short guide

Berlin is one of Europe’s busiest cities, and that means there are tons of things to do in the German city. But with only 48 hours, how are you supposed to see everything? This is our short guide to spending 48 hours in the German capital to make sure you see the best that Berlin has to offer.

Berlin Cathedral

Perhaps one of the first places you should stop by on your two-day stay is Berlin Cathedral. The building is famous across the city for the artwork on the interior walls. You can also climb to the observation deck of the cathedral, overlooking the city, and look for landmarks you want to see throughout the rest of your time in Berlin. It’s a great way to map out how you want your trip to the city to go, and you might even find some things no tourist map tells you about.

Hidden gems

There is a lot to take in when you go to Berlin, and two days might not feel like a lot of time. One way to see some hidden gems is to head to Central Park, which is a great place to find some refuge from the busy city streets.

There are lots of hidden statues and monuments to discover among the trees and bushes in the park that not every visitor to Berlin spots. You can even get a sneak peek at some of the animals in Berlin Zoo from inside the park.

Another very different thing to see is the abandoned Cold War spy station which is available to explore in Grunewald forest. There is also an abandoned theme park near Treptower Park, if you like to make your way off the beaten path.

Big hitters

One of the grandest places in all of Berlin has to be Charlottenburg Palace, which is huge and is only 30 minutes outside of the city center. You should also make your way to Museum Island at some point during your 48-hour stay to learn more about the history of the city. Here you will find a variety of museums focusing on art and artifacts telling the stories of the past.

Across several locations in the city, you can see what remains of the Berlin Wall, and you should fit in one or two visits to these places. The most famous spots include Checkpoint Charlie, Old St Hedwig Cemetery, and the Berlin Wall Memorial.

Time to eat

Berlin is a bustling metropolis, and that often means you get some good food. The German city doesn’t disappoint when it comes to feeding its residents and visitors, with lots of international foods and local delicacies to try.

The city’s food culture continues to grow, and any visitor should make sure to visit one of the spectacular food markets. One of the oldest markets in the city is Arminiusmarkthalle, which first opened in 1891. There is a hall offering freshly cooked food and a market which allows you to taste some of the finest produce in the region.

It’s going to be hectic, but if you only have 48 hours in Berlin you’ll have to make every second count. Just because you are short on time doesn’t mean you should miss out on the highlights, and these are the things we think you shouldn’t leave without doing in Germany’s capital city.
